Baby Hugo’s Story

Mp H295 Baby Hugo

For parents like Amber and Jed, and baby Hugo, your support makes all the difference.

More than 10,000 babies are born at Mater each year, but not all of them have an easy start to life. Hugo was one of these babies. Born 13 weeks premature, Hugo weighed just 940 grams.

At around 26 weeks of her pregnancy, Amber went into early labour and despite the best efforts of her medical team to delay labour; Amber went on to have an emergency caesarean-section.

“Hugo was so little; he was whisked away to Mater Mothers’ Neonatal Critical Care Unit straight away. It wasn’t until day three that I was able to hold him.

Hugo needed to be intubated and had difficulty breathing. He received three blood transfusions and experienced a small grade-two, bleed on his brain,” Amber said.

After 89 days of being cared for at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals’ Neonatal Critical Care Unit, baby Hugo was able to go home with his family.
