Charlie's Story

After suffering a heartbreaking miscarriage, Samantha and Nick dared to hope when they learned they were expecting again. This time, they allowed themselves to imagine a future, one filled with firsts, laughter, and the baby they had longed for.

But at just 14 weeks, during a routine scan, that fragile joy shattered. Their baby was diagnosed with a severe complication, later confirmed as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).

He was dangerously small, fighting for nutrients, fighting simply to stay alive.

They were told to prepare for the worst.

In the weeks that followed, their focus narrowed to a single, fragile hope: getting their baby to 350 grams, a weight where survival might just be possible.

At 26 weeks and two days, more than three months too soon, baby Charlie entered the world weighing just 360 grams. He was too tiny and fragile to be held. Within moments, he was resuscitated and rushed to Mater’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU), where a new fight began.

For 83 long days, Samantha rarely left Charlie’s side. She watched as her son fought for every breath, his tiny chest rising and falling with effort. Around them, the NCCU team worked tirelessly, guiding Charlie through setbacks and celebrating every small milestone.

Slowly, against the odds, he grew stronger.

“When we finally got to take Charlie home, it was incredible,” Samantha says. “We became a family for the first time — putting him in his car seat and driving home together.”

Associate Professor Luke Jardine says outcomes like Charlie’s are made possible through medical research.

“Every advance in how we care for extremely premature and low birthweight babies — our treatments, protocols and technology — is guided by research,” he says. “Continuing this work is vital to improving survival and long-term outcomes.”

Today, Charlie is thriving, a powerful reminder of what hope, expert care and research can achieve.

“He is a very special little boy,” Samantha says. “There were times we didn’t think he’d make it, but he’s strong and determined. He’s a fighter.”
