Danique's Story

"I never thought it would happen to me. But breast cancer doesn’t ask permission."

Danique was healthy, active, and teaching yoga when she found a small lump in her breast. She assumed it was nothing…maybe a cyst. But it wasn’t. It was HER2-negative breast cancer—an invasive form of the disease. 

"I’ll never forget my husband calling our family. I was 37 and didn’t know if I’d survive," Danique reflects. 

Her treatment was intense: a lumpectomy, double mastectomy, and reconstruction at Mater Private Hospital. She had to step away from her life to fight for it.

Not only that, but genetic testing revealed a hidden threat: a genetic mutation that put Danique at a lifetime risk of the cancer returning—and opens the door to other types forming.

But Danique had something powerful on her side: research.

Associate Professor Adam Ewing at Mater Research is advancing the understanding of genetic mutations, leading to improved diagnostic tools and personalised treatments.

His research bridges the gap between research and clinical translation, facilitating earlier cancer detection and shaping the future of precision oncology.

“Translating a patient’s DNA into actionable information relevant to their well-being is the most satisfying aspect of my work,” Assoc Prof Ewing says.

Part of Danique’s personalised treatment includes ongoing hormone therapy, as she works toward her five-year cancer-free milestone. Just a year after her diagnosis, Danique returned to teaching yoga—proof of her strength and resilience.
