Baby Rita Rose was born at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals with an extra special detail to share―born on the 13 December at 13.33pm, measuring 49.5 cm, weighing 2,842 grams and Mater’s 10,000th baby born this year!

Second time parents Kara and Joshua welcomed Rita Rose on Tuesday.

“Our first baby Eden was a Mater baby and we can’t believe we’re back this year with Rita Rose as the 10,000th baby in 2016,” said mum Kara.

“A special thank you to our wonderful obstetrician Dr Lingard who delivered both of our girls.”

Baby Rita Rose will leave Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane on Sunday, in time to spend Christmas with her mum, dad and big sister at home.

Rita was one of 33 babies born at Mater on Tuesday. An average of 28 babies are born each day at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals at South Brisbane and Mater Mothers’ Private Redland.

Mothers, Babies and Women’s Health Services, Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Maree Reynolds, said every birth was a special occasion at Mater, but particularly being the 10,000th baby born for the year.

“We are thrilled to have reached this important milestone, especially in time for Christmas, and we wish the family all the best as they enjoy baby Rita,” she said.

“We are very proud that so many Queensland families trust Mater Mothers as their maternity service and we feel privileged to share in many precious first moments.”

The busiest day of the year so far has been 15 April and 2 June, both with 45 babies born, while the busiest month so far has been January with 926 babies born across Mater Mothers’ Hospital, Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane and Mater Private Hospital Redland.

There have also been 378 multiple births—made up of twins and triplets. Mater has welcomed 5,082 baby boys and 4,930 baby girls so far in 2016.

Ms Reynolds said one-in-seven Queensland babies are born at Mater Mothers, making Mater Australia’s largest maternity service.

“Our reputation as a hospital that provides a very high level of care and expertise is something we are very proud of and this is evident by the large number of babies born at Mater each year.”
