In 2022, Ollie entered the world 16 weeks early and weighing just 520 grams. One of the tiniest babies ever born at Mater Mothers’ Hospital. Ollie’s survival was nothing short of miraculous.

His Mum, Erika, still vividly recalls those early days. 

It is a reality no parent should ever have to face.

After 159 days in Mater’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit—surrounded by extensive medical equipment and a large care team working around the clock to keep him alive—Ollie finally went home.

Just a decade ago, babies born this early had little chance of survival.

Today, thanks to life-saving neonatal research, babies born at 24 weeks now have a 70% chance of survival.

The goal is 100%—not just survival but thriving futures. 

Associate Professor Luke Jardine, Mater Neonatologist, explains:

“The research we do isn’t just about keeping tiny babies alive—it’s about helping them grow into healthy children. Research is our best hope for helping babies born at 24, 23, or even 22 weeks not only to survive—but thrive.”

Ollie’s journey is proof of how far neonatal care, through medical research, has come—and how far it can still go. At two years old, he was able to come off oxygen support. Today, he’s a happy, energetic three-year-old attending daycare like a regular toddler.
