Tackling Australia's Steepest 4WD Tracks

Australia’s rugged and remote landscapes are a dream for off-road enthusiasts, and for those craving adrenaline, few challenges compare to tackling the country’s steepest and most demanding 4WD tracks. Among the most legendary are the Billy Goat Bluff and Blue Rag Range Tracks, both situated in Victoria’s High Country region, and the Munja Track winding through the wild heart of the Kimberley. Each offers a unique blend of treacherous climbs, jaw-dropping scenery, and a real test of driving skill. Ready to test your mettle? Let’s go!

Renowned as one of the steepest public tracks in Australia, Billy Goat Bluff Track is not for the faint-hearted. Located within the Alpine National Park near Licola, Victoria, this track climbs over 1,200 metres in elevation across just seven kilometres. With its relentless inclines, loose rock surfaces, and minimal guardrails, it’s a white-knuckle experience even for seasoned drivers.

The trail offers sweeping views over the High Country’s alpine ridgelines, making the heart-pounding drive worthwhile. At the top, Pinnacles Fire Lookout provides a dramatic panorama and a moment to catch your breath. Due to the steep gradient and potential for rapid weather changes, the track is best tackled in dry conditions, and only with high-clearance 4WD vehicles equipped with low-range gearing.

Another High Country heavyweight, the Blue Rag Range Track is revered for both its difficulty and its breathtaking vistas. Starting near Dargo, this iconic trail follows a razorback ridge with minimal vegetation, exposing drivers to 360-degree views of Victoria’s highest peaks.

The steep descents and ascents along narrow ridgelines require constant focus and skilled handling. While the distance isn’t extreme—just under 20 kilometres return—the elevation and exposure make it an intense experience. The summit is marked by a trig point sitting over 1,700 metres above sea level, offering one of the best photo ops in Australia’s 4WD world.

While the track is open seasonally (closed during winter and early spring due to snow and risk of damage), it’s one of the most rewarding drives in the country for those seeking the High Country at its wildest.

Munja Track, Kimberley, WA

In contrast to the alpine challenges of Victoria, the Munja Track offers a remote and isolated adventure through the untamed wilderness of Western Australia’s Kimberley region. At over 200 kilometres long, this track extends from Mount Elizabeth Station to Walcott Inlet, winding through Indigenous lands, rugged gorges, and pristine savannahs.

Though not as steep as Billy Goat or Blue Rag, Munja Track’s difficulty lies in its remoteness, deep river crossings, overgrown stretches, and lack of support services. The step jump-up sections demand self-sufficiency, detailed planning, and a reliable 4WD setup. What you get in return is an unforgettable journey through one of the most untouched corners of Australia, teeming with wildlife, cultural heritage, and stunning isolation.
