The 70-series LandCruiser is already built Toyota tough, but for this prize package, Mater Cars for Cancer have upped the ante with a huge modification package from Outback Customs. Their hand-build, bespoke solutions have been making tough fourbies even tougher for 17 years, and the prize LandCruiser has had just about every one of their boxes ticked.
Outback Customs have taken a 70-series LandCruiser—one of with the trusty 4.5 litre V8—and built a beast born to break free. That big bent eight doesn’t need much to wake it up, so they’ve thrown a GSL four-inch exhaust up under the rig, knowing that the Toyota’s already-significant power and torque ratings will get nothing less than a good beefing up.
It will need that extra power too, because Mater Cars for Cancer have let Outback Customs go wild, building the LandCruiser to break free of the caravan parks and go further into the Never Never have ever before. Sure, win the prize and you’ll get an Austrack Talawana X15 hybrid offroad camper which will get you plenty far, but this machine, with over $180K worth of mods alone, you will truly go wild. A reminder though, that tickets are selling fast.
Before we start proverbially piling on the mods, rest assured the LandCruiser can take them thanks to a pre-registration Tough Dog 4.2 tonne GVM upgrade, with the standard eight-leaf rear end replaced with a heavy-duty, 11-leaf system. Even with the two-inch lift, pre-rego engineering ensures the mods are approved Australia-wide.
All this extra strength will not only help the LandCruiser soak up whatever you throw under it but ensures it will carry everything Outback Campers threw on it. Most obvious is their Series 4 tray and canopy combo, with tough, all-steel construction, kitted out with drawers and a sturdy prep table. A peep inside the doors reveals a Bushman Fridge 85-litre upright fridge/freezer to keep things chill while you’re away, run by an Enerdrive power system with a 200ah lithium battery supporting a 2000-watt inverter, fed by a tilt-up, 180-watt solar system on the roof.
Getting away from it all really is getting away from it all if you leave the caravan behind, so Outback Customs has you covered, quite literally, with an AX27 Clamshell Rooftop Tent and huge, 270XT Awning from The Bush Company. You won’t need to go to bed grotty either, as Outback Campers have fitted an under bonnet hot water shower system with a Darche shower tent, and a 165-litre water storage tank nestled in the chassis.
The fit out includes an ARB dual compressor with hose, allowing easy operation of deflating and reinflating tyres depending on the terrain you gain. Recovery tracks are included, and if you’re really stuck, there’s a Warn VR EVO 1200lb winch fitted to the ARB Summit Mk2 bullbar up front. A Rhino-Rack roof rack is fitted over the cab area complete with a STEDI LED light bar, and STEDI work lights illuminating the surrounds when you’re camping in the dark. This one-of-a-kind truly is built to break free, so a ticket would aid and abet you to do the same.
It’s fair to say that the 70-series LandCruiser Military GXL isn’t a natural luxury car; the word ‘military’ is right there in the name, after all. But keeping it tough doesn’t mean you have to be uncomfortable, so Mater Cars for Cancer tapped Outback Customs to make the inside as good as the outside.
There’s a big, Polaris head unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, with a Focal subwoofer and amplifier fitted to the rear interior panel for that deep sound experience. The Department of Interior have supplied in-door speaker pods with map pockets both front and rear, plus a full-length replacement centre console with cupholders and storage trays that retain Toyota’s tough, high-quality factory feel.
One of my personal favourite mods is the interior rearview mirror because, well, what do you reckon you’d see with a big, brutal, go-anywhere canopy right behind the back window? Normally nothing, but with the ARB DVR rear camera mirror kit, you get a constant rearview display, right there in the mirror itself.
The prize truck has the looks to back up the build, having received a custom respray in popular Slate Grey (Nardo Grey to the trackday bois) and a set of four 17in ROH Assault alloy wheels, with a pair of spares hanging off the back, all wrapped in Nitto Ridge Grappler tyres.
It's a big build thanks to Outback Customs; built to go further, built to break free, built to stay a while and built to go wild. And yeah, you could win this custom LandCruiser; give yourself a chance to build your daydreams now.
