The Sunshine Coast is blessed with many dazzling attributes, not least its sparkling beaches, temperate climate, and picturesque natural surrounds. Boasting lush rainforests, towering peaks, and breathtaking coastal landscapes, this sought-after region is a permanent fixture on hiking destination bucket lists for good reason. From gentle strolls to challenging treks to cliffside scrambles, there is a barrage of beautiful trails to be discovered, and to suit all ability levels. Lace up for unmatched scenery, unique wildlife, and unforgettable experiences—here are the top 6 Sunshine Coast Trails not to be missed.

Pack your camera, water, and some tasty snacks for this iconic Sunshine Coast hike up the steep face of volcanic laccolith, Mount Coolum. The approximately 1.6km return trail may be short, but it packs a punch with its incline. The climb is well worth the effort though, rewarding adventurers with sweeping vistas over the ocean, hinterland, and even as far as the Glass House Mountains on a clear day. Keep an eye out for the resident nesting pair of Peregrine Falcons, as well as Echidnas, Bandicoots, and Flying Foxes.

If you’re looking for world class ocean views and pristine beach pauses, this one’s for you. Noosa National Park’s 10.8km (return) Coastal Walk whisks you past breathtaking aspects and lookouts including Tea Tree Bay, Dolphin Point, and the ferocious and humbling Hell’s Gates. Visit between June and November and you could even be treated to a sighting of migrating Humpback Whales. While some of the path is unsealed, it’s still a fairly easy trek suitable for most ability levels.

Hikers be warned, this 4.7km circuit includes over 300 stairs! If you can, ahem, step up to the challenge though, you’ll get to lay eyes on one of the most beautiful rainforest settings this region has to offer. Of course, the highlight of the walk is towering Kondalilla Falls, which cascades over 90m into a crystal-clear rock pool. It’s the perfect spot for a mid-hike swim, especially in warmer months.

Ready to level up? For those who love a challenge, the Glass House Mountains offer multiple graded hikes that showcase the region’s dramatic volcanic peaks. Mount Ngungun is one of the most popular, with a 2.8km return trail leading to a summit with awesome 360-degree views. More experienced hikers may want to tackle Mount Tibrogargan, which involves some tricky rock scrambling, but offers a truly rewarding experience.

For a more immersive hiking journey, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk is a multi-day trek (allow four days) covering 58km through subtropical rainforests, eucalypt trees, waterfalls, ridgelines, and more. If you can’t manage four days on the hop, the hike can be broken up into smaller sections and tackled in a half or full day.

If shorter, more leisurely walks are your preference, beeline to peaceful Buderim Forest Park for a gentle trail leading to sweet Serenity Falls, a picturesque waterfall that feels more like a secret escape. The 600m boardwalk section offers easy access for all fitness levels, and along with the tranquil rocks, lush vegetation, and native fauna, makes this a great family friendly experience.
