Neil Perry is one of Australia’s leading and most influential chefs. He has managed several quality restaurants in Sydney and today concentrates on his seven restaurants in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, and is founder of the successful “Rockpool” Empire.
Neil’s career in hospitality began at Sails Restaurant at McMahons Point and in Rose Bay. He began starting at front house, but Neil’s love of great food saw him quickly move backstage. By the time he was 24, he found himself gravitating towards the kitchen. He soon realised his passion for cooking by working with, and learning from, chefs such as Stephanie Alexander, Gay Bilson, Damien Pignolet, Steve Manfredi and David Thompson.
In October 1986, he opened the Blue Water Grill at Bondi Beach and took the site from a 20 year failure to an overnight success. In 1989 Neil and his business partner (his cousin Trish Richards), opened Rockpool, with the intention of establishing one of Australia’s finest restaurants. In just six months it was voted Sydney’s best new restaurant in the Good Food Guide and over the years it has won many awards both here and overseas. In October 2006, Neil opened the Rockpool Bar and Grill in the Crown Complex in Melbourne, with Spice Temple and Rockpool Bar & Grill Sydney both lifting off in early 2009. October 2010 saw the opening of Spice Temple Melbourne, with Rockpool Bar & Grill Perth opening in January 2011 and Rosetta Ristorante in October 2012.
Neil’s passion, desire and the significance he places on quality produce are evident in all his dishes and the business projects he undertakes. The plentiful awards and honours won by the restaurants that make up the Rockpool Restaurant Group are a testament to this. Rockpool is a previous receiver of Australian Gourmet Traveller Restaurant of the Year, The Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year award, and was voted in the top 50 restaurants in the world by UK magazine ‘Restaurant’ seven years running. Furthermore, Rockpool Bar & Grill Melbourne won The Age Good Food Guide’s Restaurant of the Year award in 2008. Neil’s determined enthusiasm for Australia, food and wine, excellence, travel and recipe books have driven him to where he is today, and he continually strives for excellence of quality in everything he does.
To achieve his quality ambitions, Neil remains to this day a hands on chef, personally selecting ingredients, creating recipes and leading his team by example in restaurant kitchens.
Neil also heads up a team of seven consultants to Qantas Airways, reflecting his desire to bring great food to all Australians. The Rockpool Consulting team is integral to the food and wine training and communication for all premium flight attendants, and in addition work with Qantas to develop service delivery to reflect a more modern in-flight dining experience.
