About the Mustang Shelby GT-H

To truly appreciate the origins of the Mustang Shelby GT-H, it’s worth knowing a little about the man behind the name – Carroll Shelby. Born as the son of a humble postman in Texas, Carroll would go on to forge a brief stint as a Formula One racing driver.

Following his racing retirement, he moved into car production. His first project was brokering a deal between Ford and British producer AC to supply V8 engines for their sports car, the AC Cobra. What quickly became known as the Shelby Cobra is now revered as one of the greatest sports cars of all time.

That partnership with Ford saw him take the reins to their upcoming models of Mustang. This is where his legacy with this automotive giant hit new heights.

The Mustang GT350

His work with Ford on the Mustang GT350 created one of the greatest driver’s cars of all time. This car blended raw muscle with top-of-the-line transmission, racing-calibre tyres, and a lightweight, two-seater construction. However, for the pure love of driving that the Shelby GT350 was able to instil, it was still out of financial reach for most drivers. That’s when Shelby brokered yet another deal for Ford, but this time with Hertz Rent-a-Car. The result was a racing car available for all to rent – the Shelby GT350-H (yes, the ‘H’ stood for ‘Hertz’).

Their “Rent-a-Racer” promotion saw the production of 1,001 GT350-H models, all featuring the iconic black finish, black interior, and bold, gold Le Mans stripe across the top. The promotion was as successful as you’d expect, with the vehicles being sold to the public.

Driving race cars was an avenue for me to learn how to build my own car, and that was my ambition all along. – Carroll Shelby

Today, Ford has rejuvenated Carroll Shelby’s vision for giving everyone the chance to drive a true race car with their latest Mustang Shelby GT-H. To pay homage to the car’s phenomenal legacy, it’s even finished with the same black paint and gold Le Mans stripe.
